Bills

Dear 24th District Neighbors,
Summer is here in full swing and even though I’m not due back in Springfield until November, there is plenty of work to do!
When our legislative session ended on May 31st, the bills that we were able to pass in both chambers of the legislature then headed to the governor’s desk for his signature.
Of the bills that I worked on as Chief Sponsor this session, the following are awaiting the governor’s signature:
HB 4922 – A bill prohibiting post-issuance fees on rebate cards
HB 5143 Public Act 100-0770^ – The Dutch Reach and Bicycle Safety bill
SB 3103 – Immigrant Tenants Protection Act
SB 2908 Public Act 100-0719^ – Spanish translation for notifications about the elimination of land lines
You can help by calling the governor’s office (312-814-2121) letting him know that you support these bills and encourage him to sign them.
A selection of other bills which I co-sponsored that are still awaiting the governor’s signature are:
HB 2354 Public Act 100-0607^ — Lethal Order of Protection (firearms restriction for individuals deemed potentially harmful to themselves or others)
HB 4516 Public Act 100-1026^ — Insurance coverage of Hearing Aids for children under 18
SB 2332 — Restricts sale of Tobacco Products to those over 21
SB 35 — Immigrant Safe Zones Act—keeping churches, courts, schools, and hospitals safe from ICE raids
Make a difference! Call the governor’s office and tell him which bills you care about and want him to sign!
Always at your service,
Theresa Mah
State Representative
24th District

Immigrant Rights (SB 3103)*
To create protections for immigrant families that rent homes, Rep. Mah advanced legislation implementing guidelines that prohibit landlords from discriminating against a tenant based on their immigration status. Additionally, the measure creates legal remedies that tenants may take against problem landlords
that violate the terms of the act.
Bicycle Safety (HB 5143) Public Act 100-0770
The "Dutch Reach" bicycle safety bill passed both Houses and is headed to the governor's desk. HB 5143 would add the Dutch Reach method of opening a car door to the Secretary of State's Rules of the Road drivers' handbook. The use of this method could decrease the
number of bicyclist injuries and fatalities.
Demographic Data (HB 3131) Public Act 100-0275
Rep. Mah was the Chief Sponsor of HB 3131 which requires the Department of Human Services to collect and publicly report statistical data on the racial and ethnic demographics of participants of programs administered by the Department. All of the demographic information collected will be made publicly available and racial and ethnic classifications will be standardized.
Language Access (SB 1869) Public Act 100-0320
Rep. Mah was the Chief House Sponsor of SB 1869 which was passed to Increase language access to legislative information and government services. The website containing legislative information, including committees, public acts, and legislative actions, will be made available in multiple languages. The act also created the Language Access to Government Services Task Force to identify language access issues in Illinois and to recommend ways to eliminate language barriers to government services.
